How Does Alcohol Affect Blood Sugar Levels?

    • Glucose, which is the scientific name for blood sugar is your body's fuel or energy that is required to feed your brain, body tissues and your nervous system. Your body makes blood sugar or glucose from the carbohydrates, proteins and fats that you eat. It is imperative for your body to perform at an optimum level to maintain your blood sugar levels.

    • Although most people like to drink alcohol, it is a poison to your body. Alcohol impedes the sources of blood sugar and the hormones (insulin and glucagon) needed to maintain an adequate blood sugar level. It really does not matter how much or how often you drink, alcohol can affect your body each and every time it is consumed. When you drink, the secretion of insulin increases, causing low blood sugar. It can also damage the body's hormonal response that normally corrects the low blood sugar. Heavy drinkers can drain their body's glycogen storage within a matter of hours. In time, excessive drinking will diminish the effectiveness of insulin, resulting in high blood sugar levels.

    • Is High blood sugar bad? Is low blood sugar bad? Theoretically, they are both bad. Whether it be from alcohol or some other source, when production of insulin is slowed or stopped, your blood sugar levels decrease causing a low blood sugar condition called hypoglycemia. If higher concentrations of insulin are produced, it would cause a high blood sugar condition called hyperglycemia. A primary source of fuel for your body is sugar, your brain needs sugar and depends on the rest of your body to provide sugar for it. If your blood sugar rises too high or falls too low, this could have a detrimental affect on your body.
